Tour 02 · Boulder City, Lake Mead & Hoover Dam

Sheep in the morning, a wonder by noon.

Southeast of Vegas the desert gets wilder and then, suddenly, monumental. Watch wild bighorn sheep graze a city park, feed the carp swarming Lake Mead's boat docks, then stand on top of Hoover Dam. Three stops most visitors never string together.

The Day

Three stops, one easy loop.

Your day begins with pickup at your residence around 7:30 AM. The ride southeast to Boulder City takes 40 to 60 minutes, winding out of the valley and toward the water.

First stop: a park where wild mountain sheep come down to graze most mornings. Then Lake Mead, where you'll walk to the boat docks and feed the fish (popcorn provided) while the marina wakes up around you. Hoover Dam is 15 minutes away: through the security gate, onto the dam itself for a walking tour, and into the gift shop before the ride home.

Ranger's note: the sheep are there most days, but they're wild animals and there's no guarantee. I read the morning and know their habits; if they don't show, the lake and the dam still make the day.
$85per person

Minimum 2 guests · maximum 4.

Includes driver and guide, comfortable vehicle, water and snacks, popcorn to feed the fish, pickup and return to your residence, and a facts brochure.

  • Bring: sun lotion, sunglasses, a sack lunch or snacks for the end of the tour, and a hat. Hold on to it at Hoover Dam; the wind means it.
  • Optional add-ons at the dam: the video tour and the inside-the-dam tour are available for an additional charge, paid at the visitor center.

Itinerary · 7:30 AM Start

The morning, stop by stop.

  1. Bighorn Sheep Park Boulder City

Wild mountain sheep graze the grass here most mornings, often 10 to 15 feet from where you stand. Cameras out; I know where they like to be.

  2. Lake Mead Boat Docks Fish Feeding

A short walk to the docks, where the carp gather in swarms. Popcorn provided. A great chance to take pictures, watch the water and relax.

  3. Hoover Dam Walking Tour

Through the security gate and onto the dam. Walk the rim, look 700 feet down the face, hear how it was built, and hit the gift shop before the ride home.
